around the island without a motor vehicle is surprisingly easy. Bute is only 5 miles wide,
with gently sloping hills and beautiful vistas and benefits from being explored in a

offers easy cycling on quiet, country roads, and enjoyable, unchallenging coastal routes
range between 4 and 9 miles from the main town of Rothesay. For the more seasoned cyclist,
a number of routes exist on multi-discipline paths around the island, with a range of
distances and degrees of difficulty. Road and Mountain bikes are available for hire in
Rothesay. |

A thriving cycle club -
Bute Wheelers - is active in developing cycling events, notably the Isle of Bute Cycle
Festival held each September and involving a range of races in senior, junior and juvenile
classes. The local bike shop also organises and sponsors the annual mid-summer Mountain
Bike Challenge which attracts competitors from far and wide who compete a prestigious,
locally handcrafted, trophy. |
