Happy New Year
2006

We have seven evenings of fine film to present to you
until April. We think you'll enjoy the mix of our second
“half” of the season.

Post Christmas

Film List

Jan 8th
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Mexico, Colour (2001)
Two teenage friends meet an older woman and invite her on a summer trip to a paradise beach. One of the best road movies in recent years, the fine
cinematography takes full advantage of the Mexican setting, with long cooling shots of bodies jumping into water and panoramic vistas.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
USA Colour (2004)
A couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
Feb 5th
Kukushka
(The Cuckoo)
Russia (2002)
The second world war is drawing to a close. A Finnish Sniper and a Soviet Army captain, disaffected with the war, find themselves being sheltered by a Lapp woman. They are enemy soldiers but just men to their host. The Cuckoo is a
gorgeously photographed and emotionally resonant film that is more than an
anti-war fable
Feb 19th
Ae Fond Kiss
UK, Colour (2004)

A Ken Loach drama in which sparks fly in Glasgow's south side when a young Asian man enters into a relationship with an Irish schoolteacher. This interracial love story is as socially aware as any of Loach’s output but is inherently more positive in its outlook.

In the Mood for Love
Hong Kong/
France (2000)
An exquisite lament on inhibited love in 1960’s Hong Kong. Rain-drenched streets, claustrophobic social conventions, dumplings and heart-felt passion. When neighbouring tenants Chow and Su discover their spouses are having an affair, they embark on a secret role-play to understand how it might have developed.
March 19th
Les Choristes
(The Chorus)

France/Switz/Germany (2004)
An unemployed musician arrives at a disciplinarian boarding school for disruptive children, and attempts to organise his charges into an a cappella choir. Made on a limited budget this wonderful film was a huge success in France.
